NOT TOO LITTLE, NOT TOO MUCH
commissioned by forbo flooring, studio stefan scholten researched the colour and application of furniture linoleum.
Inspired by the natural materials that you find in interiors, such as wood, leather, pottery and textiles, the amsterdam-based studio developed a colour palette of five tones: clay, leather, walnut and the existing warm greys pebble and mushroom.
the end result echoes an emotional value and at the same time is optimally applicable. to demonstrate the ideal use of this natural surfacing material, studio stefan scholten designed a table and a stool with linoleum as a starting point.

TRACES
a collection of stone wall patterns inspired by the landscape of the quarry.
Based in the foothills of the Apuan Alps, Luce Di Carrara has decades-long experience in manufacturing stone solutions. This heritage gave Studio Stefan Scholten the opportunity of working with the best artisans, state-of-the-art production techniques and being able to curate the most beautiful stone. The region is famous for producing some of the most celebrated stones that belong to the history of ancient and contemporary art. A unique territory that became patent after visiting one of the quarries.
The two patterns, Bench and Reverse, are inspired by the textures and shapes found in the quarry and pay homage to the local crafts and history.

SOLID & SHAPE CARPET TILES
solid and shape are a visual exploration of various recycling technique. the different colours in the melange yarns give a surprisingly colourful impression when examined in detail.
tarkett can separate the backing from the yarn and reuse it as backing for next desso carpet tiles. the yarns are reprocessed to produce new carpet yarns.
stefan scholten: "our project was based on this process. how do you translate tarkett's cradle to cradle philosophy into a collection that visibly and tangibly reflects it? We wanted the carpet tiles themselves to reflect the fact that they are the result of upcycling"

NICO BY STUDIO STEFAN SCHOLTEN COLOUR PALETTE
the design process started by creating a colour wheel with pragmatic colours taken from materials normally found in interiors —like wood, metal, concrete, and plants—and intuitive accent colours overlapping each other.
the final selection (new colours 901-906) presents a fresh palette that can be used in both residential and contract upholstery projects.

THE MARKER WALLPAPER
‘the inspiration for this collection was the original markers that i often draw with. this is not only reflected in the recurring striped pattern on the wallpaper but also in the way that the colours bleed into each other, which is characteristic of marker ink. these “bleedings” have been perfected by bn’s advanced machinery in at least eight printing runs. so you can literally see my handwriting in this collection. with this personal collection, i want to give a taste of what’s to come in my partnership with bn for many years.’ – stefan scholten

CREATIVE DIRECTION
BN International has brought creative director Stefan Scholten on board to reinvent the company’s ambitious mission: to create traditional, high-quality wallpaper with unique designs. Another feature of this long-term partnership will consist of attracting other leading designers.
Stefan Scholten: ‘Irma Boom is an imaginative designer who always looks at her subject from an independent perspective. Her book designs create a world full of surprising compositions and provocative observations. Essentially, that’s exactly what BN International aims to achieve with its collections: to change an interior into a new, surprising world. The book she created for BN International is not a run-of-the-mill company profile or a sales book with the various collections, but a source of inspiration that helps our customers create their own world.’

BOLD SOFA
lensvelt approached studio stefan scholten with the request to design a sofa in their first collaboration. 'i felt that the collection could use some softening and organic forms" - stefan scholten. the bold series is a sofa system with four main elements that visually connect to each other. the shapes are soft and friendly and offer optimal comfort. with its varied, compact elements, the bold program is ideal for private use, as well as public spaces.

AFRICAN-INSPIRED ACOUSTIC PANELS
studio stefan scholten used maharam textiles woven in african-inspired-compositions for the offices of aham in amsterdam.
aham vastgoed is a real estate company that has been supporting, for many years, projects with a direct link to the improvement of education, living conditions and healthcare in africa.
“our western perception of textile design has been coloured by the expectation of seeing an identical pattern or motif repeated within a certain area of cloth. it therefore comes as a surprise to find that african artists show an extraordinary uniformity in their taste for varying the geometric with the unexpected.” christopher spring - curator of the british museum of london

STONE HOUSE PROJECT
the stone house project is all about up-cycling stone waste by disclosing its beauty and considering different applications. stefan scholten and his team explored centuries-old techniques in the industry, known as terrazzo, palladiana, mosaico and marmorino during a collaboration with morseletto, which inspired them to use stone waste in a unique and very aesthetic way. saw residues, broken pieces, chunks and even marble grit are literally used to design and produce tailor made furniture, walls and even a stone carpet.

S3 COLLECTION
'my designs in marble are basically an ode to italian life and to forte dei marmi, this beautiful location where i live and run my second design studio. a round dining table, a coffee table are central furniture pieces where life happens with family and friends. the standing light always creates the right intimacy. when those pieces are produced with the finest italian marbles, they almost become a piece in-between art and design of a timeless beauty.' ― stefan scholten

VORM AAN DE VECHT EXHIBITION DESIGN
exhibition design for 'vorm aan de vecht' at buitenplaats doornburgh, a former monastery projected by jan de jong, pupil of monk-architect dom hans van der laan. the building, designed in the famous language of the bossche school, uses principally brick, concrete and wood. and employs a special ratio and measure-system called the 'plastic number'.
in response to the sober architecture and its rough textures, we created a series of coloured translucent foils to be applied on the windows using the 'plastic number' proportions. the colour brings life and nature into the building making a connection between the monastery and its beautiful surroundings. as a support for the exhibited objects studio stefan scholten designed large cabinets with natural aluminium frames and glass tops using lightness and reflections to complete the exhibition.
